Often a scar will fade as time goes by, but there are ways to make a scar that has not done that less noticeable. Treatments can vary from over the counter remedies to medical procedures, and the relative results from these treatments will depend upon the size and degree of scarring.

If your particular scar is rather light and not easily seen, consider a home remedy like the Curad Scar Therapy treatment. These strips contain natural ingredients that encourage new cell production and cause scars to become very light or even vanish.

Scars that are a little more severe and should be seen by a dermatologist, consider using more advance cream products like Scar FX or Retin-A. These products are simply rubbed into the skin and will help stimulate cell rejuvenation. Dermatologists also recommend Mederma, another sheet/strip treatment that works in the same manner to improve the skin’s appearance.

A physician may feel that the best choice for a person with severe scarring is surgery to actually replace the scarred skin. Dermatologists and physicians can offer either laser or conventional surgery options.

While laser treatment is less invasive, it can be more expensive because multiple treatments may be necessary to obtain results. Laser surgery works by removing the damaged blood vessels that are responsible for the discolored appearance of scars and bolster new cell growth to help heal the remainder of the scar.

On the other hand, conventional surgery will removed the affected area completely, but skin grafting or sutures may be required and possibly will leave their own scars. However, some people believe the original scars look much worse than the smaller scars resulting from surgery.

Knowing how to prevent or at least reduce scarring is wise, and you can use a cream or lotion to prepare the skin against damage when you anticipate an event that could cause scarring, such as pregnancy, surgery, or weight loss.

Although, most scarring is accidental and not intended, so there are treatment options available. It is helpful to realize there are several ways to handle scar treatment.
